Held yearly on the fourth Sunday of October, the Venice Marathon features a scenic 42.195km point-to-point route through the Metropolitan City of Venice in Italy.

The course, certified by AIMS and World Athletics, begins at the gargantuan Villa Pisani in the small town of Stra, which is situated approximately eleven kilometres east of Padua.

The route takes the runners eastwards along the Brenta Canal with its many beautiful Venetian villas, through two urban boroughs of the City of Venice (Marghera and Mestre), and then across the four-kilometre-long bridge that connects the mainland with the islands of Venice.

The final three kilometres of the race are run through the centro storico where runners cross 14 bridges, covered with wooden ramps so that they don't have to run up and down the steps. One of the bridges is a 170-metre-long temporary pontoon bridge across the Canal Grande.

The finish line is on Riva dei Sette Martiri in the heart of the city.

Participants would be well advised to go into the Venice Marathon with a conservative approach. For the most part, the route is flat, but there are some gentle climbs on the second half of the course, and the 14 little bridges in the historic city centre can make you experience a considerable degree of discomfort.

In addition to the marathon, the event offers a half marathon and a 10k fun run, starting in Mestre and finishing on Riva dei Sette Martiri.
