The 61.35km Supermaraton from Croatia's capital Zagreb to the old town of Čazma is one of Croatia's oldest and most prestigious running events.

Held since 1976, the race has attracted a large number of Europe's best ultra marathon runners, most notably from Hungary, Russia, Ukraine and Poland.

Starting at the Ban Jelačić statue on Zagreb's main square (pictured), the first 27km are run on a busy main road which is not closed to traffic for the time of the race.

The second half of the route runs on much quieter roads through rolling countryside. The final kilometre is uphill as the finish line is at Čazma's imposing Romanesque 13th-century church which stands on top of a hill.

Last year, the Supermaraton had 89 finishers. The winners were Péter Steib of Hungary (3:55:55) and his compatriot Szilvia Lubics (4:43:28). The time limit to complete the course is seven hours.
