Held annually on the first Sunday in Advent, the Ratzeburger Adventslauf attracts a crowd of about 2,000 runners to the town of Ratzeburg in northern Germany.

Both races (7.3km, 26km) begin and end in Ratzeburg's Old Town, which is situated on an island in the Ratzeburger See, one of the many beautiful glacial lakes in the region.

The 7.3km route takes the runners around the Küchensee, the southern part of the lake, whereas the 26km route runs around the Großer Ratzeburger See, the northern part.

Both routes are undulating and mainly on gravel paths and trails, with some sections on asphalt (10-20 per cent).

Last year, the 26km race had 1,291 finishers. The winners were Maik Willbrandt in 1hr 28min 55sec and Moni Rausch in 1hr 43min 19sec — well below the time limit of 3hr 15min. Almost 500 runners completed the 7.3km loop around the Küchensee.
