The Mali kraški maraton (Karst Half Marathon) offers a 9.4km run, a 21.1km half marathon, children's races, and a race walking competition.

Held on the beautiful Karst Plateau (Slovene: kras), which is partly in Slovenia and partly in Italy, the event attracts approximately 2,500 participants.

All races begin and end in the small town of Sežana in Slovenia.

The 9.4km race takes the runners on asphalt and gravel roads through woods on the Slovene side of the border.

The half marathon, however, is a race through two countries — Slovenia and Italy. Participants run through the pastures of the famous Lipica Stud (where Lipizzaner horses have been bred for over 400 years), across the state border into Italy, through the villages of Basovizza, Padriciano and Trebiciano, back into Slovenia, and through the village of Orlek. The race is run mostly on asphalt. A short section is on an unpaved road.

Both routes are undulating and very scenic.

Remember that at 2am on the day of the event the clocks jump one hour forward due to the start of 'European Summer Time', so don't be late!
