Starting every year at 11am on New Year's Eve, the Wiener Silvesterlauf features a highly-scenic 5.35km loop course around Vienna's Old Town.

The race takes the runners along the imperial Ringstraße which is lined with grandiose monuments and buildings. The route passes, for instance, the Hofburg, the Austrian Parliament buildings, the Rathaus, the Staatsoper, the Burgtheater, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the Stadtpark with the gilded Johann Strauss Monument (pictured).

Last year, Bob Haller of Luxembourg (16min 25sec) and Viktoria Schenk of Austria (18min 48sec) led an international field of 3,367 runners across the finish line.

The time limit to complete the course is 90 minutes.

The race is also open to walkers, nordic walkers and runners with dogs. Dogs must be kept on a leash and wear a muzzle.
