The Geolauf is held in Villach, a town of 60,000 people in Austria's state of Kärnten (Carinthia) which borders Italy and Slovenia to the south.

Starting at the Fachhochschule Kärnten (Carinthia University of Applied Sciences) in the eastern part of town, participants run a 7.2km loop on cycleways along both banks of the River Drau—at first towards the town centre and then back along the opposite river bank.

The route is mostly flat but it features some short ascents as well.

It is possible to form a team of three runners and run the race as a relay. The first team member runs 3km, the second 1.5km, and the third 2.7km.
