The Kassel Marathon takes around 10,000 runners through the streets of Kassel, a city of  about 200,000 people, located in a hilly region in the state of Hesse in central Germany.

The event offers a half and a full marathon, a marathon relay for teams of four runners, and races for children, inline skaters, handcyclists, walkers and nordic walkers.

The 42.2km marathon is held on an undulating single-loop course which starts at the Auestadion on the edge of the Baroque Karlsaue park. The finish line is on the athletics track inside the stadium.

There are not many historic sights along the route (Kassel was badly damaged in World War Two) but the city is well worth a visit for its fine museums and art exhibitions and for its wonderful parks.

In 2014, the fastest marathon finishers were Kenya's Kiprotich Kirui (2:14:09) and Caroline Kwambai (2:43:58). The time limit to complete the course is 5hr 30min.
