Staged in the hills around the village of Monteforte d'Alpone near Verona in northern Italy, the Montefortiana attracts up to 20,000 runners and walkers every year.

Most participants take part in one of the non-competitive runs and walks which range from 9km to 28km ("Marcia").

Competitive runners can choose between the half marathon ("Maratonina Demmy") or the full marathon ("EcoMaratona Clivus").

All routes are very hilly loops through lovely scenery and old villages in the wine-producing region between Verona and Vicenza.

The marathon is a multi-terrain race which includes about 1500 metres of ascent (and 1500 metres of descent). The half marathon is run mostly on asphalt roads.

After the run, many participants wait until afternoon to watch the thrilling "Montefortiana Turà" races, which are for top runners only. Women run four laps through the village (6,060 metres) and men run seven laps (10,605 metres).
